So there’s this local joint here in Lexington known as Stella’s Kentucky Deli. And to be honest, they don’t look like much on the outside. But that’s how they get you.
You walk in, and its a little cramped. But you’re distracted by the old timey flair. The all-wood bar. They tiny little tables. The Ale-8 in the fountain machine. And to be honest, all their food is amazing. I just had a hot brown there today… never seen anything like it before in my life. And I’m from Kentucky. I know my hot browns.
And then you glance up at the specials menu. And there’s a tiny corner of it that says “Homemade Soda.” And I knew it was for me.
I feel like in the past I saw some sort of berry soda listed there. Huckleberry, Boysenberry, I don’t rightly remember. But today they had Jalapeno.
Upon first glance, it doesn’t look like anything special. It just looks like 7UP or club soda. I take my first swig… Ale-8? No… it’s something different. I keep going. I want to taste the club soda, but there’s something different in there. And then the aftertaste hits me. BOOM. Spiciness. Actual Jalapeno flavor. Such a strange flavor sensation from a soda.
I proceeded to ask them how they made it. It would appear that they actually do use club soda, along with some homemade jalapeno simple syrup. This means… no artificial sugar AND no artificial additives. I think I’m in love. With this soda.
In addition, belch factor is quite high. I think its probably the club soda. But still, this isn’t a soda you’ll be gulping down anyways. It’s something more to savor. So you won’t need to worry about too much in the way of belches.
Here’s a ridiculous video of Stella’s mission statement, sung by two random dudes who get assaulted in the middle of the video. Enjoy!
That pretty much sums it up.
Until next time,

How does the acidity of this drink stack up to, say, a standard cup of joe?
I’m getting one of these legendary “hot browns” next time I come up that way.
Indeed, it was a tasty yet strange drink combo….
I would like to know what food pairing they may suggest for jalapeno soda.. sounds interesting to say the least..
What a great journal. I spend hours on the net reading blogs, about tons of various subjects. I have to first of all give kudos to whoever built your theme and second of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an fabulous article. I honestly think there is a skill to writing articles that only a few posses and honestly you got it. The combining of clarifying and upper-class content is decidedly super infrequent with the king-sized amount of blogs on the net.
Danelle, thank you for your exceptionally uplifting comment! We love what we do here, and we hope it shows in what we write!
